Here is a capsule look at the members of the 2013 Earlaustinjr.com All Area Colleges Women’s Team.
Abby Duethman (Maryville) – The Earlaustinjr.com Area Colleges Player of the Year, the 6’0″ senior was the Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Year and an NCAA Divsion II Second Team All-American. Duethman had a tremendous all-around season, averaging 15.9 points, 9.5 rebounds while shooting 50 percent from the field and 74 percent from the free throw line. She also had 45 assists and 39 steals in leading the Saints to the GLVC West Division title. She finished her career as Maryville’s all-time leading scorer with 1,463 points.
Brittnye McSparron (Maryville) – The 5’6″ senior was a big part of Maryville’s GLVC West Division championship team as a starting guard. McSparron averaged 12 points a game with 61 assists and 41 steals. She also shot 78 percent from the field. She was an All-GLVC Second Team selection.
DeVonna Smith (UMSL) – The 6’0″ senior from Kirkwood High was an All-GLVC Second Team selection after leading the Tritons in scoring and rebounding. Smith averaged 13.5 points and 9.7 rebounds while shooting 49 percent from the field. She led the GLVC in rebounding. Smith was also selected to the GLVC All Defensive Team.
Melissa Gilkey (Washington University) – The 6’1″ sophomore was an All University Athletic Association selection after leading the Bears to a 22-6 record and the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Division III Tournament. Gilkey averaged 15.4 points and 7.3 rebounds with 29 blocks, 31 steals and 28 assists. Gilkey was also an All Central Region selection and an Honorable Mention All-American.
Caty Ponce (McKendree) – The 5’6″ sophomore guard from Edwardsville High was an All GLVC Second Team selection. Ponce averaged 16.6 points and 3.2 assists while shooting 40 percent from 3-point range. She made 62 3-pointers to set a new single-season record at McKendree.
