Senior guard Ash Yacoubou enjoyed a career night in leading the Billikens past SIU-Edwardsville 70-60 in a non-conference game in Edwardsville, Ill. It marked the first SLU road victory since November 18 of last season when the Billikens defeated Indiana State 69-56 Terre Haute. That’s exactly one calendar year.
The 6’4″ Yacoubou was dominant in victory as he led the Billikens with 24 points and 15 rebounds, both career highs. He led four SLU players in double figures. Junior guard Mike Crawford added 15 points, sophomore Milik Yarbrough had 12 points while sophomore guard Miles Reynolds scored 11. Yarbrough also grabbed 10 rebounds to become the second SLU player to have a double-double on the evening.
Sophomore center Austin Gillmann blocked three shots and nailed a key 3-pointer with seven minutes left to tie the Cougars at 50-50. The Billikens took control of the game from that point.
After spotting the host Cougars a 9-2 lead, SLU tightened the defense and held the Cougars to 28 percent shooting from the field. The Billikens also blocked eight shots and forced 15 SIUE turnovers. Freshman center Matt Neufeld added two blocks.
SLU (2-0) returns to action on Saturday evening when they host St. Francis-Brooklyn at the Chaifetz Arena. Tip off is at 7 p.m. Hope to see you all there. If you cannot make it, you can catch the action on 101-ESPN with SLU Hall of Famer Bob Ramsey and yours truly on the call.
