My weekend actually started close to home in North County when I ventured over to McCluer to see the host Comets take on Jennings. I was looking forward to a hotly contested up and down affair between two athletic teams.

To my surprise, I witnessed a dominant effort by Jennings as they took a 77-61 victory over a very good McCluer team. The Warriors improved their record to 5-0 and looked very good doing it. They jumped out to a 23-7 lead and never really looked back. McCluer made a couple of mini runs at them, but they were easily repelled by a determined bunch of Warriors.

Jennings got a game-high 22 points from 6’2″ senior forward Tahj Welch. He maneuvered inside for easy buckets and short jumpers throughout the evening. Senior guard Darius Rice scored 21 points and did a great job of running the show. Rice has developed into quite a point guard over the past three seasons. He got the Warriors going early with some nice jumpers, then sat back and fed his teammates. When it was time to make something happen again, Rice would deliver a pull up jumper and knock down some free throws to seal the victory.
