St. Louis wins the MBCA Missouri Challenge

The St. Louis All-Stars won the championship of the Missouri Challenge for the third consecutive year in Springfield, MO. The eight-team tournament is part of the Missouri Basketball Coaches Association All-State and Hall of Fame Weekend.

The St. Louis team started the weekend with six players and finished the tournament with only five, but that didn’t stop them from rolling through its opposition from Central Missouri, Northeast and North Central.

In the championship game, St. Louis defeated South Central 116-88. The St. Louis team shots lights out in the finals as they made 57 percent from the field, 45 percent of its 3-pointers and 85 percent of its free throws.

Ryan Briscoe (Duchesne) led the St. Louis team with 30 points in the championship game. Corey Shepherd (Hazelwood East) followed with 25 points and eight rebounds. Darius Rice (Jennings) had 23 points and game-high five assists. Dominique Loyd (Kirkwood) had 22 points and team-high 11 rebounds while Malik Barnett (Riverview Gardens) finished with 16 points. Aaron Cook (Westminster) was with the team during the first day.

Corey Shepherd of Hazelwood East was selected the Most Valuable Player of the Tournament. Charles zogby, the state’s budget secretary, said the district had made sufficient progress toward improving its academic performance and finances
