Gene Bartow dies at 81; Led St. Charles to state title in 1957
Hall of Fame college basketball coach Gene Bartow died on Tuesday at the age of 81. Bartow's illustrious career began in 1957 when he led St. Charles High to the MIssouri Class L state championship in 1957. The Pirates defeated North Kansas City 60-54 for the state title.
Bartow went to enjoy great success in the collegiate ranks at several stops. In 1973, he guided Memphis State University to the championship game of the NCAA Tournament against UCLA in a game that was played in St. Louis.
In 1976, Bartow was tabbed as the man to replace legendary UCLA coach John Wooden after he retired after leading the Bruins to the NCAA title in 1975.
Bartow was responsible for starting the basketball program at Alabama-Birmingham, where he build the Blazers into a powerhouse program. In 1982, UAB advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament. UAB was a member of the Great Midwest Conference and Conference USA with Saint Louis University.
In 2007, Bartow and several living members of his 1957 state championship team at St. Charles got together for a 50-year reunion at the St. Charles-Washington basketball game.
