(February 20 event to benefit people of Haiti) Former Wellston High girls basketball coach Carl Davis has put together a nice basketball event to help the victims of the recent earthquake in Haiti and celebrate the legacy of Wellston basketball in the process. The Hoops 4 Haiti event will be held on Saturday, February 20 at Eskridge High in Wellston (1200 Sutter). It will feature eight games, starting with youth teams in the morning and ending with an All-Star game featuring many of the former greats from Wellston.

“I was watching the coverage of the earthquake on CNN and I really wanted to do something to help the people in Haiti,” said Davis. “I really felt for them and I wanted to help in any way I could. I just started calling all the people that I knew and everyone got on board.”

The price of the event is $5 for adults (21 and older), $2 for young adults (ages 15-20) and $1 for children (ages 6-14). Children under five years of age get in free.

All proceeds from the event will go to the relief effort in Haiti. People are also encouraged to make donations during the games.

The event will begin at 11 a.m. with a youth game between the Lakers and STL Hawks (6-8 year olds). It will be followed by the Hoyas vs. Rockets (6th and 7th grade) at noon; Pressure vs. Heat (6th and 7th grade) at 1 p.m.; Wizards vs. Warriors (8th grade) at 2 p.m. The event will continue with a 50-and-over game at 3 p.m. and two 40-and-over games at 4:15 and 5:30 p.m.

The final game of the evening will feature a group of former stars from Wellston High at 6:45 p.m. The school is closing its doors at the end of this year and will merge into Normandy High next year. The game will feature many former Trojan stars such as Edgar Wilson, Garry Beals, Jeffrey McCaw and so many other players that help make the Trojans one of the top small-school programs in the state.
