What’s your “One Shining Moment?”
The NCAA Tournament is in full swing now that we are in the regional semifinals and finals this weekend. The Final Four will be decided after these next two rounds. One of the most popular traditions of the tournament is the playing of the song, “One Shining Moment,” which is played at the end of the broadcast of the national championship game. The incomparable Jennifer Hudson will perform the song this year, taking the reins from the late-great Luther Vandross and Teddy Pendergrass.
I have enjoyed many shining moments during my 24 years years of covering high school and college basketball, plus my 19 years as the radio color analyst of the Saint Louis University Billikens.
This page is dedicated to everyone’s shining moment in basketball. In the comments section of this page, I would like for you to let me know what your shining moment was in basketball. It could be your favorite moment during the NCAA Tournament, the high school state tournament or a youth basketball tournament.
Here are my shining moments:
1) As a SLU broadcaster, my favorite moment came in 2000 after the Billikens just completed the “Miracle in Memphis” when they came in the Conference USA Tournament as the No. 9 seed, then won four games in four days to win the tournament and the automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament. After the game, then-coach Lorenzo Romar called my broadcast partner Bob Ramsey and I over to join in the traditional celebration of cutting down the nets. I was also overcome with emotion when I climbed up the ladder to cut my piece of the net down. I have always admired Lorenzo for letting us participate in this sacred tradition.
2) As a high school basketball fan, and big brother, watching my younger siblings help their teams win state championships. In 1986, I watched my sister Courtney hit the dramatic game-winning shot in the Class 4A state-championship game to give McCluer North a 50-48 victory over Hickman Mills. In 1995, I witnessed my younger brother Richard help his Cardinal Ritter team win the Class 2A state championship in Columbia. I managed to sit in the same exact seat in the Hearnes Center for both games, which took place nine years apart. You can call me superstitious.
3) My favorite NCAA Tournament moment came in 1983 when the “Dream Game” between the University of Louisville and Kentucky University played in the Mideast Regional championship game. For many years, Kentucky had gone through great lengths to avoid playing Louisville. “The Ville’s” chance finally came in this game with a Final Four berth on the line. As a lifelong fan of Louisville, I had also waited for this moment for my entire young life. The Cardinals were my guys, with the likes of Lancaster Gordon and Rodney McCray (pictured), Milt Wagner, Charles Jones and Scooter McCray. After years of running away from the Cardinals, it was finally on. UK raced out to a big lead, but Louisville tracked them down and forced overtime. The overtime period was a thing of beauty as the Cardinals slammed the door on the Kentucky and won the game 80-68, finishing the dream game on a dramatic array of slam dunks. I could not get enough of it.
Those are my shining moments. What are yours?

I had several of those, but IMO, those don't count. The ones that do, are the ones you hit over an actual fence.
And I got mine on Field #1 at ABC Ballpark in St. Ann, circa 1991.
It was an American Legion game my junior year in h/s. Right off the bat, I knew I hit it good. But I didn't think it was going over the fence.
So I ran hard, thinkin' maybe I could get a triple out of it. But as I was rounding first, I heard our 1st base coach say "No way!"
I looked up thinking somebody had caught it. But instead, I caught the flight of the ball just in time to see it hit the big tree behind the fence for the one & only over-the-fence HR of my life.
Couldn't believe it then. Still can't believe it now. But I've got witnesses to prove it really happened.
