What’s your “One Shining Moment?”

Your shining moments are my shining moments Earl. The state championships in 1986 and in 1995 were both wonderful. But I remember one of your many shining moments-1982, McCluer North vs. Soldan. In the few seconds left in the game, my big brother Earl Austin Jr. hit his own game winning shot- a baseline jumper-nothing but net-to beat the State Champs from the previous year.(I think.) It was the most exciting game I had ever witnessed. I remember wearing my rainbow sleeved blue sweater with matching rainbow vest, my favorite at the time. I remember running out to the court with the highschools kids (I was a middle schooler), finding my brother, and jumping into his arms. I was so proud of Earl and I still am!

I guess my own personal "One Shining Moment" would have to be the only HR I ever hit over a fence. I bet we've all hit those little league HRs, where you hit a ball into the gap, but there's no fence, so the ball just rolls, and you circle the bases before the outfielders can get the ball back in.

I had several of those, but IMO, those don't count. The ones that do, are the ones you hit over an actual fence.

And I got mine on Field #1 at ABC Ballpark in St. Ann, circa 1991.

It was an American Legion game my junior year in h/s. Right off the bat, I knew I hit it good. But I didn't think it was going over the fence.

So I ran hard, thinkin' maybe I could get a triple out of it. But as I was rounding first, I heard our 1st base coach say "No way!"

I looked up thinking somebody had caught it. But instead, I caught the flight of the ball just in time to see it hit the big tree behind the fence for the one & only over-the-fence HR of my life.

Couldn't believe it then. Still can't believe it now. But I've got witnesses to prove it really happened.

Mine has to be, as a Syracuse fan, the Hakim Warrick block to seal the 2003 title for the Orange. Just watched it again the other day on the NCAA Vault web site. Coach Boeheim finally got the title he's worked so hard for and the respect he deserved.
