Big Upset: Rockwood Summit enjoyed one of the biggest upsets of the season last week when they shocked McCluer High 55-50 last Tuesday night. The Falcons have only eight victories this season, but none bigger than the one over the Comets, who are tied for first in the Suburban North Conference and have 20 victories.

Senior forward Kevin Dwyer was the dominant factor in Summit’s upset victory. The versatile 6’8” senior had 20 points, 14 rebounds, four steals, four blocks and three assists to lead the way.

Bringing the Drama: There’s nothing like hitting the game-winning shot at the buzzer to knock off your cross-town rivals in a packed gymnasium. Breese Mater Dei junior Connor Beckmann experienced that kind of joy last Friday night when he hit a 10-footer at the buzzer to give the Knights a 40-38 victory over their rivals from Breese Central. Beckmann picked up a loose ball and flipped up the game-winner as time expired to touch off a wild celebration in Mater Dei’s gym. The victory was Mater Dei’s seventh in a row and 19th overall.

Illinois Girls Postseason Begins: Regional championships were on the line last week as the metro east girls teams got their postseason underway.

Nashville won its 11th consecutive regional championship with a 51-25 victory over host Sparta last Friday night. The Hornettes advanced to the Class 2A DuQuoin Sectional, which begins on Tuesday night.

Breese Central defeated Wesclin 46-34 to win its own Class 2A regional championship. Breese Central advances to play in the Murphysboro Sectional.

In Class 1A action, host Marissa won its own regional in dramatic fashion with a 35-34 victory over Okawville. Senior guard Kara Wine scored on a driving layup with one second left to give the school its first regional championship in girls basketball.

The girls Class 3A and 4A regional tournaments get underway on the Illinois side this week. Undefeated Mater Dei (26-0) is the top seed in the Class 3A regional tournament at Mascoutah with Belleville Althoff (20-7) coming in as the No. 2 seed. The two teams have met three times this year with Mater Dei winning all three games.

Southwestern Conference champion Edwardsville (27-2) is the top seed at its own Class 4A regional tournament. East St. Louis (19-4) is the top seed at the Class 4A Belleville East regional, with host Belleville East and Belleville West right behind.

Freshman of Influence: Roxana High freshman center Hunter Reine enjoyed a huge performance in leading the Shells to a victory over Piasa Southwestern last Tuesday night. The 6’7” Reine had 26 points and 24 rebounds to lead the Shells to a 44-36 victory. It was one of the most dominant performances of the season by a player in any class. For the season, Reine is averaging 14.8 points and 10 rebounds a game.

Winning Streak Continue: The boys of St. Francis Borgia ran its current winning streak to 37 games after defeating Vianney 73-60 last week. The Knights are currently 21-0 and ranked No. 1 in the state in Class 4A.
