McCluer North wins Collinsville championship to make history
For the second consecutive year, McCluer North became the first team from outside the state of Illinois to win a big Christmas Tournament in Illinois. The Stars defeated host Collinsville 45-44 to win the Schnucks Collinsville Tournament on Friday night. Last season, the Stars became the first non-Illinois team to win the Centralia Tournament by defeating O'Fallon.
Senior guard Byron Ray scored 16 points to lead the Stats in the championship game. McCluer North swept Southwestern Conference teams Belleville East, East St. Louis and Collinsville in their first appearance in the Collinsville Tournament.
In the semifinals, the Stars defeated East St. Louis 63-57 behind a huge effort from 6'8" senior forward Jordan Granger. The Auburn-bound Granger had 18 points, 14 rebounds and seven blocked shots in a dominating performance. Granger was voted the Most Valuable Player in the tournament. Junior guard DeShawn Munson had a game-high 26 points and 16 rebounds for the Flyers.
